About the Author
Damion Spencer (b. 1983) is originally from St. Mary, Jamaica, and now lives in Tokyo, Japan. He is a University of the West Indies graduate and holds an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Hull. He writes about the vestiges of colonialism and how immigrants carry and recreate the landscape of home. Among other publications, his work has appeared in The Caribbean Writer and The Jamaica Gleaner, and he has been longlisted for the 2022 BCLF Elizabeth Nunez Award for Writers in the Caribbean and the 2022 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. He was also shortlisted for the 2021 Queen Mary Wasafiri New Writing Prize. His work has earned a Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) gold medal and was featured in the Best of Festival Series. The Devil’s Horsewhip (Barbican Press, May 2025) is his debut novel-in-stories. He is currently working on his memoir.
